"Stories from the Mountains"
Monday, December 12th
Doors Open at 6pm
Talk 7pm
Guest Speaker is David Harrap
Twenty-Nine Years On Top Of The World .
Tickets are $10.00 for the general public but only $5.00 for Historical Society members. Tickets can be purchased at the museum in advance or at the door but space will be limited to 70 people.
Cash Bar.
I'd never climbed a mountain before coming to Jasper in 1993; growing up in England I'd climbed lots of trees, though! My son, Liam, had never climbed a mountain, either . Pyramid Mountain would be our first one. I was 48, Liam had just turned four. I'm a single dad, and had his mother been alive she would have said :"You're taking him--where? Are you nuts!"
And so it began: hundreds of mountains climbed, thousands of nights in a tent, summer and winter. Boiling hot (I was out last summer when the heat dome in June arrived, camping in the alpine with not a bloomin' bit of shade to be had! ); and freezing cold (minus 35 C one trip in the Tonquin). Camping and climbing in Canada, the US, Iceland, Scotland and Australia.
Many of the mountains climbed were unnamed, that is until we climbed them and gave them a name; for that's the prerogative of climbers who strike off where no one wants to follow! They don't have the cachet of named peaks but you have them all to yourself.
I'm still out there dragging the old bones up mountains; Liam and I did three more mountain trips this summer. And I was out on my own (as I have been for the last 15 years since Liam took off to uni and work) this summer, camping with my brothers the grizzlies, having my tent blow away like a balloon for a kilometre in one hell of a gust, and trying to get up a couple of peaks ( I chickened out on one close to the summit; and got stumped on the other--close to the summit).
So it would be stuff like this. And I have photos.

We are very grateful of Dwain Wacko for donating the posters to us as a fundraiser. There are so many posters it is impossible to sell them all at once, so we are breaking it into themes.
The theme for this auction is Halloween and will run until Sunday, November 13th at 5pm.
Please share with your friends and family.

Join us one more time at the Chaba Theatre to Celebrate 96 years of History
Tuesday, June 28th
7:30pm
Doors Open 6:30pm
The night will start with a screening of the hilarious film “The Railrodder” with Buster Keaton followed by a presentation by Dwain Wacko on the history and his memories of the Chaba.
We will then be asking the audience to come up and share their memories of the Chaba, so don’t be shy.
We will finish off the night with a screening of the film “Challenge - The Canadian Rockies!” If you are not familiar with this movie it was filmed in Jasper National Park by Wendy Wacko and Jim Elzinga and it is narrated by the famous Sir Peter Ustinov. The movie ran in the Chaba for many weeks in the mid 1980’s.
Tickets to The Last Picture Show can be purchased in advance at the museum
Historical Society members are free and for non-members we are asking for a $10 donation. Members you still need a ticket, but you can just call the museum to be added to the list.

“Stories from the Mountains”
Monday, May 9th at 7pm
Guest Speaker is Cyril Shokopoles
Cyril Shokoples is an ACMG Mountain Guide and Mountain Rescue guru. Cyril has been at the forefront of climbing development and climbing education for decades. Cyril is synonymous with Jasper climbing in both winter and summer helping establish areas like Hidden Valley into what it is today as well as establishing many first ascents of ice climbs in Jasper and the surrounding area. Cyril has worked hard to maintain a currency in both equipment and climbing technique throughout his 40+ years of climbing. He has already left an immeasurable mark on Jasper and all of Canada’s climbing community through education and innovation of safety techniques that include the creation of the effective acronyms DARN SOLID ANCHORS and a BRAKES check for rappelling. We are all very fortunate that he has chosen Jasper to be one of his main stomping grounds.
Tickets are $10.00 for the general public but only $5.00 for Historical Society members. Tickets can be purchased at the museum in advance or at the door but space will be limited to 70 people.
Cash Bar. We are encouraging everyone to still mask up.

It’s almost closing time when you run into a strange figure, dressed in period clothes and seeming confused. The mysterious character, identifying only as Circa (Sir Henry Thornton) , is horrified to discover they are in the modern era, and many of things they remember and love are now behind glass; on shelves; written about in history books. They have no recollection of who they are, or how they got there.
Only pictures, items and stories from a time long ago seem to trigger memories about their identity. Stay with Circa for anecdotes from their life as they come flooding back, and travel through time, searching for clues. Make sure to avoid the security guard at closing time in order to help Circa find their identity; the ultimate treasure.

"Jasper's Pictorial History Starts Here: Paul Kane in 1846 and Thereafter" by Ian MacLaren
Thursday, September 21st, 2017 at 8:00pm
Well known historian and author Ian MacLaren will be at the museum to give a talk about his research on famous artist and story teller Paul Kane.
Irish-Canadian artist-traveler Paul Kane (1810–1871) was Canada’s first recognized painter and his book “Wanderings of an Artist” was first written in 1859 telling the story of Canada’s First Nation’s people between 1845 and 1848. Ian MacLaren, the author of “Mapper of Mountains” and “Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park” will be sharing photos of some of Paul Kane’s sketches that were made during his westbound trip with a Hudson's Bay Company brigade up the Athabasca and Whirlpool rivers to Athabasca Pass and the Columbia River during the first week of November 1846. They are by far the oldest pictorial records of any points in the park, and they are more than two decades older than Canada.
As the title of the talk, "Jasper's Pictorial History Starts Here: Paul Kane in 1846 and Thereafter" suggests, Ian will show the audience images of the park before the three valleys were reserved as Jasper Forest Park in 1907 and in the first few decades after it became a park officially in 1909. Because 2017 happens to mark the centennial of the publication of the first guidebook to JNP, Ian will be featuring images from it, as well. That guidebook, “Description of & Guide to Jasper Park” is by Morrison Parsons Bridgland, the surveyor who, by photography, made the first maps of portions of the park.

An Evening with Dr. Peter Murphy
Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at 7:30pm
As part of our newest exhibit “Cutting Ties” in Jasper National Park we will be hosting a talk on the exhibit.
Forestry Professor Emeritis, Dr. Peter Murphy will be here to give a talk on the Whirlpool Tie Logging operation. Since tripping over one of these sites in 1992, Dr. Murphy has been studying and researching to find the story behind the camps.
It has been a long slow search through the archives across the country trying to piece together the story of the Whirlpool Tie Logging camps. This piece of Jasper’s history has been well hidden except for a place called the Jack Ladder and the camp remnants you hike through on the way to Athabasca Pass.
The talk will cover the many things he has learned and the questions left to puzzle over. His research culminated in the exhibit “Cutting Ties” that we are presenting in our Showcase Gallery until Nov 9, 2017.

Our Final Summer Mini-outing
Tuesday, August 15th at 10:30 am
Our next stop will feature the
Jasper Cemetery
Burgon Bickersteth was present at the funeral of a railway construction worker in the early 1900s-one of the earliest burials in the Jasper Cemetery.
“A more beautiful place no one could desire for a last resting place. Imagine a long stretch of short green grass, sloping down to the Athabasca, and all round young green pines; opposite the hills rose steeply from the river, and away to the east shone the snow covered peaks of Mount Hardisty”.
Join us at the gates to the Jasper Cemetery for our final mini-outing of the summer to learn more about this historic location.
Bring your own mug - coffee and goodies will be provided.

The Real Thing is the first official biography of Ian McTaggart Cowan (1910–2010), the “father of Canadian ecology.”
As the head and founder of the first university-based wildlife department in Canada, Ian McTaggart Cowan revolutionized the way North Americans understood the natural world, and students flocked into his classrooms to hear his brilliant, entertaining lectures regarding the new science of ecology. Cowan’s early work in the national parks became the foundation for wildlife conservation and environmental education in Canada. McTaggart Cowan spent many months in Jasper National Park studying and collecting birds and mammals and drawing on the expertise of locals such as Jimmy Simpson, Frank Bryant, Charlie Phillips and James Brady.
